Sabai Special Edition Mathmos Astro Lamp.

Mathmos lamps have always reflected the most beautiful forms of kinetic lighting.

The Astro Lamp, Mr Craven Walker's invention became an icon in the 1960s and 1970s. Mathmos' products have on occasion been seen to be customised to be used as corporate gifts or as promotional items. They also often feature in a wide range of films. The Astro Sabai is essentially a violet/ red Astro, however the bottle features an exotic array of beautiful artwork which has been printed onto the bottle. The graphics show a wide range of objects and add a graphic feel to the lamp which adds depth and character to the piece.

One of these lamps surfaced for sale and was purchased by my friend Martin. We both share a passion for Mathmos and for Rainbow, the children's programme that features Zippy.

Thank you kindly to Martin for images of this unique Astro. It features the base and cap of an ordinary Astro with the high quality spun polished look base and cap.

Please see the images below for details on the graphics on this amazing piece. The artwork on this piece features flowers, leaves, monkeys, boats, it is truly magical.

In a lot of ways this piece reminds me of the wonderful graphic projector Gobo wheels that Mathmos sells for their amazing Space Projector. The graphics tell a story of the natural contents of the the Sabai product and would look great in a upmarket club on tables or a bar piece.

In many ways this kind of application of graphics on the bottle directly could lead to some interesting products if explored by a design team. I love the way the word Sabai is written under a cascade of stunning graphics.

Images below show the bottle when cold with a closeup of the bottle's graphics, you can see the word Sabai and jungle style graphics on the bottle. I really love the monkey hanging and trying to reach something and the fish on the top of word Sabai.

The amazing detail on the Astro bottle can be really seen when looking closeup at the bottle. The graphics add a really cool graphic funk dimension to the lamp and really wonderful. The red wax behind the graphics is really striking. I love the graphics of the flowers near the word Sabai. The graphics come alive as they glow red as the lava inside flows and illuminates different parts of the lamp. Please see images below: illuminated bottle with lava flowing.

The lamp's graphics are hynotic and they cover the bottle to create an exotic feel to the piece. These graphics are key to the Sabai brand.

When the lamp is placed in the dark, the graphics on the lamp really come alive and are very beautiful, below you can see the bottle in the dark when the Astro is lit up and you can see birds, houses, leaves, elephants and a whole myriad of wonderful shapes. Please see the images below:
